TotalDistraction is an independent games development company from Plymouth, UK. We also create tools and assets for other game developers, as well as offering contractual services such as 3D modelling, software development, and web and graphic design.
TotalDistraction was unofficially founded as a team of four in October 2016 during the final year of the founders’ course, for a group project that required producing a game as if the group were a real game studio. During that semester, the initial prototype of Megaton: Total Destruction was developed. Having received a lot of positive feedback, three of us decided to continue development to a full release, and so the company was officially incorporated on 14 February, 2017.
Development of Megaton: Total Destruction
At the insistence of our course leader, the game was submitted to the International STEM Students’ Forum (ISSF) 2017, and surprisingly was accepted into the final showcase selection. The timing of the conference, our honours projects, and the need to achieve more than three frames per second during explosions meant that the entire prototype had to be rewritten in three weeks. This was worth it, however, as we were able to showcase our game in person and gain some international recognition (despite feeling slightly out of place compared to the much more serious exhibits we were surrounded by). On our return, we spent the next four months transforming our prototype into an actual game, and finally reached a point where we were comfortable publicly releasing it into Early Access on Steam in October, two months later than originally planned. Since then, we have been continuing work on Megaton: Total Destruction to add more levels and content.
